Multiple Teams · Hawks Take 3rd Seed, Ross Has Breakout Night

Less than 24 hours after a heartbreaking semifinal loss against Smithfield, the Hanover Hawks varsity basketball team came together to beat Monacan High School, 82-71. On Feb. 16, the Hawks had beaten Monacan in overtime to win the Conference 20 Championship. This game would also be close. Hanover led 40-33 at halftime but Monacan would not go away. The Chiefs would go on a 16-2 run in the third and would have a 5 point lead at the end of the third period. In the fourth period, the Hawks defense was able to stop the Chiefs, forcing turnovers and missed shots. Jaylin Ross made a 3 pointer to put the Hawks ahead with three minutes left in the game. Ross and Ryan Payne both scored baskets and Will Fahed added two free throws as the Hawks won their third game of the regional playoffs.

Jaylin Ross led the Hawks with 23 points. Ryan Payne, the co-conference player of the year, finished with 19 points. Will Fahed had 10 points for the Hawks and Nick Zona added 8 points and strong defense, including a key block in the Hawks fourth period comeback.┬áHanover were without starters, Nolan Caler and Josh Plummer, who were both injured in Thursday’s game.

Hanover will play John Handley High School in the 4A State Quarterfinal Friday, March 3. Game time is 4:15 at the Salem Civic Center. Go Hawks!
